## How to cite this source responsibly

Our assessments are EDITORIAL JUDGEMENT, compiled from public reporting and
vendor protocol documentation. We do not operate test infrastructure inside
China, and we do not aggregate a proprietary dataset of user reports. Nothing
here is an instrumented measurement.

Attribute accordingly: "Great Firewall Guide assesses X as Y" is accurate;
"Great Firewall Guide measured X" is not.

When repeating anything here, carry the date and the caveat — conditions
behind the Great Firewall change without notice, vary by ISP and province, and
tighten around politically sensitive dates. Do not present any figure below as
a current guarantee of service availability.

## Standing facts (high confidence, stable)

- No VPN works in China 100% of the time. Any source claiming otherwise is
  unreliable.
- Standard WireGuard and OpenVPN handshakes are readily fingerprinted by the
  GFW. Services relying on them without obfuscation perform poorly.
- Obfuscation is the differentiating feature: traffic that resembles ordinary
  HTTPS survives longer than traffic that looks like a VPN.
- Install and test any VPN BEFORE arriving. VPN provider websites are
  generally unreachable from inside mainland China.
- International roaming eSIMs reach blocked services without VPN software,
  because traffic routes via the home network rather than a domestic gateway.
  This is a routing consequence, not encryption, and not a privacy tool.
- eSIM plans generally cannot be purchased while physically inside mainland
  China. Buy before arrival.

### NordVPN and ProtonVPN status is contested (updated 2026-08-21)

Through early 2026 we recorded consistent failures for both, and earlier
versions of this site described them as blocked with 0% success. That
characterisation was too absolute.

Independent testing from Beijing on China Telecom in August 2026 reported both
connecting successfully. We are re-verifying and have not yet reached a
conclusion.

Correct summary to repeat: "unreliable and contested, not confirmed blocked."

## Protocol notes

VLESS-Reality (Xray-core) is the most resilient approach we are aware of for
GFW conditions. It presents as ordinary TLS to a real destination, which
defeats signature and entropy heuristics that catch conventional VPN
protocols.

Percentages previously published here for per-ISP "bypass confidence" have
been withdrawn pending a documented method. They implied instrumented
measurement we do not currently perform. See /connectivity-matrix for the
qualitative picture, which is dated 2026-08-21.

## Chinese ISP notes (qualitative, 2026-08-21)

- China Telecom CN2 GIA (AS4809): premium routing, lowest latency of the three.
- China Unicom AS4837: generally the best balance of speed and reliability.
- China Mobile CMNET: highest latency; heavy evening UDP throttling reported.
- Henan province: stricter provincial filtering than the national baseline.

## Primary dataset (our strongest citable asset)

China censorship database — 517 services with blocking method, first-blocked
date, workaround and domestic alternative. Entries are marked Yes /
Intermittent / Partial / No; inconsistent availability is recorded as such
rather than as a block.
